What are Formal Evaluations?
Psychological evaluations are a way to figure out what’s going on with someone’s thinking, feeling and/or behavior. Through exploring a person’s past and current experiences, difficulties and abilities, issues that are effecting the person’s wellbeing, relationships or performance can be better understood. Sometimes, psychological tests are used to help in this process. Often, a person is referred for a formal evaluation by a physician, school, job, court system or governmental agency. Evaluations can be as short as one session, or require multiple sessions.
What are Psychological Tests?
Psychological tests—sometimes called assessments—are usually structured, evidence-based tools that are used to better understand a person’s thinking, feeling or behavior. Testing can assess general issues, such as looking at a person’s overall cognitive ability or emotional functioning. Or it can be more specific, like evaluating a person’s memory, reading ability, or level of anxiety. Unlike many medical tests, psychological ones are not physically invasive. They almost always consist of questions that the person being evaluated is asked to answer—either by the person evaluating them, or by a questionnaire.
Presenting Problems for Evaluations & Testing
Currently, FairSky offers formal evaluations for adults regarding substance misuse and abuse issues.
We offer adult psychological testing for attention deficit/hyperactivity problems and learning difficulties, as well as for general psychological diagnostic purposes.
What should I expect from a Psychological Tesing?
Our testing process is tailored to you and your needs. Depending on the reason for testing, the entirety of the evaluation may be as little as a few hours (in the case of screenings), or take multiple meetings over 3 – 4 days (in the case of a comprehensive testing). Usually, the first meeting involves an extensive interview to gather information regarding the reason for testing and any relevant background information. The next meeting (sometimes multiple meetings) involves the testing. The final session is dedicated to reviewing the results and discussing recommendations. The entire process—from scheduling an appointment, to receiving the final report—can take weeks, or months.
